Today is a big day for author birthdays and they couldn’t be more diverse.
On this day in 1775 Jane Austen was born in Hampshire England. She would go on to become one of the most famous and collected female authors of all time. She is best known for the novels Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815). Austen passed away in Winchester on 18 July 1817, at the age of 41.
On this day in 1899 playwright Noel Coward was born in Teddington, southwest London. He was an English playwright, composer, director, actor and singer whose plays are still actively performed today. Coward was knighted in 1969 and was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He received a Tony Award for lifetime achievement in 1970.
On this day in 1917 Arthur C(harles) Clarke was born in Minehead, Somerset, England and grew up in nearby Bishops Lydeard. He went on to become a British science fiction writer, science writer and futurist, inventor, undersea explorer, and television series host. He published books in almost every genre and is still widely considered as a father of modern science fiction.
On this day Philip K(indered) Dick was born along with his twin sister, Jane Charlotte Dick, born six weeks prematurely on December 16, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois. He would go on to become the most celebrated and awarded author in the science fiction genre. His works include Valis, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Total Recall, Minority Report to mention just a few.
