As we close out 2016 we take a look back at some of the events of the past year. We want to thank everyone who participated and the community who attended. Here are some of the high points of the past year at Landmark Books.
March saw us crown the King of the Beats of Traverse City at InsideOut Gallery. The Record Eagle did a great story on the event which saw participants compete to be the new King of poetry in the Traverse region.
In April we celebrated National Poetry Month with readings featuring some of the best local poets. Here is a list of poets we would like to thank for participating this year: Michael Hughes, Jim Olson, Carrie Cantalupo-Sharp, Paul Stebleton, Fleda Brown, Anne-Marie Oomen, Teresa Scollon, Jennifer Sperry Steinorth and Catherine Turnbull.
June we held our third Type-In and had nearly 40 typewriters on hand for people to try out. The event has grown and collectors from all over Michigan attended this year’s event. We are shooting for 50 typewriters in 2017.
August we held our second Haiku Contest which drew over 400 submissions. This year’s winner was Ed Turry. We look forward to next year when we will offer the contest again.
September we celebrated Banned Book Week with a chance to buy banned books which were donated to local schools. We were able to donate copies of Slaughterhouse Five, To Kill A Mockingbird, 1984 and Fahrenheit 451 to schools so that they may continue teaching these important works of literature.
October Landmark Books marked its third anniversary.
December we were able to offer our typewriter for use to type letters to Santa. This year over 150 letters were typed on our vintage Remington typewriter for Santa and it was featured in a story in the Record Eagle.
Landmark Books also offered Book Collecting 101 on How To Build a Home Library and Typewriter 101 on How To Clean and Maintain your typewriter. This educational series will continue in 2017.
What will 2017 bring? Who knows…but Landmark Books will look forward to bringing you exciting and family friendly events for boo lovers of all ages. Remember to like us on Facebook and watch our website for upcoming events and we hope to see you at the store. Cheers and Happy Reading!
