Today we celebrate the birth of a true literary giant, Rudyard Kipling. He was born on this day in 1865, in Mumbai, India. Five years later he was sent to England for schooling in Southsea, Portsmouth. He returned to India in 1882 and took a job as assistant editor of a small paper called the Civil and Military Gazette.

In 1889 following a trip nearly around the world Kipling made his way to London and entered the London literary scene. He stayed in London until he suffered a nervous breakdown and was advised by doctors to leave London. In 1891 he did just that. He left with his former publishing agent’s sister Carrie and toured the world until 1892 when they married in London.

Kipling wrote and published actively into the 1930’s writing short stories, novels and poetry as well as contributing articles to many of the times most popular magazines. On January 18th, 1936 Kipling passed away following surgery for a hemorrhaged intestine. He rests between the graves of Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy.

His legacy is still felt today and many of his works remain in print nearly one hundred years later. He published his first short story in 1885 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. His most well known works include ‘The Phantom Rickshaw’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Captains Courageous’ and ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi’.
